A obra de Sarmento viria a adquirir pleno sentido e entendimento durante a d\u00e9cada de 1980, em que regressou \u00e0 pintura, depois de uma fase mais marcada pela fotografia e pelo cinema. Para al\u00e9m das diversas fases por que passou, e das diferentes t\u00e9cnicas utilizadas – pintura, desenho, fotografia, v\u00eddeo, cinema, escultura – uma constante se identifica: o desejo. Esse desejo \u00e9, em primeiro lugar, o desejo de um corpo, for\u00e7osamente feminino, que se desenha incompletamente por sobre as superf\u00edcies texturadas a branco ou verde. Mas \u00e9 tamb\u00e9m a fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o de imagens que surge nas obras dos anos de 1980 (como, por exemplo, Estrat\u00e9gias de Sobreviv\u00eancia, de 1984, ou Mehr Licht, de 1985). A refer\u00eancia ao desejo n\u00e3o implica, necessariamente, na obra de Sarmento, a representa\u00e7\u00e3o de figuras ou situa\u00e7\u00f5es explicitamente sexuais. A partir do fim desta d\u00e9cada, a sua pintura adquire fundos extremamente texturados. Sobre estes fundos, inscreve-se uma figura ou uma cena, ou ainda fragmentos de diversas figuras, sempre por completar, sempre com uma sugest\u00e3o de contida viol\u00eancia que nunca \u00e9 realizada: s\u00e3o as s\u00e9ries das Pinturas Brancas e Emma.
Sarmento tem conduzido uma carreira internacional a partir da sua resid\u00eancia em Sintra, foi o \u00fanico representante de Portugal na 47.a Bienal de Veneza (1997), onde voltou a expor em 2001, e das suas exposi\u00e7\u00f5es individuais salientam-se: Werke 1981-1996 (1997), Haus der Kunst, Munique; Fundamental Accuracy (1999), Hirshhorn Museum e Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C.; Flashback (1999), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Palacio de Vel\u00e1zquez, Madrid; Something is Missing (2002), Museu de Arte Contempor\u00e2nea de Serralves, Porto (com Atom Egoyan).
A sua obra est\u00e1 presente nas cole\u00e7\u00f5es do Museum of Modern Art e do Solomon R.
